Brief History of Rhode Island
In 1520, Giovanni da Verazzo explored the Narragansett Bay Islands.
In 1636, Roger Willliams founded the Rhode Island Colony under the principles of Religious toleration. It became a refuge for religious dissenters who came from other colonies. The colony was called Rogue's Island by the Puritans of the Massachusett's colony.
In 1638, the first Baptist Church in America was established in Rhode Island.
The first Quaker meeting house was established in Rhode Island.
The city of Newport was founded in 1639. It became a major port by the early 1700s.
Rhode Island was the first colony to declare Independence from the British. It was the last to ratify the US constitution.
In 1790, the first water powered cotton spinning mill in America was the Slater Mill built in Pawtucket.
In the early 19th century, Manufacturing mills flourished throughout RI during the Industrial Revolution.
In 1828, Irish immigrants dug the Blackstone Canal by hand.
The state of Rhode Island, sent troops to fight in the Civil War for the Union. However, no battles were fought in the Civil War in the state.
In the 19th and 20th century, the rich and famous flocked to RI for holidays and vacation to enjoy its beaches. Elaborate mansions were built in Newport and other towns.
